How Soon After An Auto Accident Should I Start Car Accident?

Immediately! You should go to the hospital or urgent care immediately, if appropriate, or go see your physician to rule out more serious injuries. Once you have been cleared, you should begin physical therapy as soon as possible, even as soon as the same day.

Many people don’t experience the full extent of their pain for a few days and the earlier you can get seen, the better. It can drastically shorten the amount of pain you experience and the time it takes to heal. Delaying treatment may cause further tissue irritation (muscle tightening, spasms, stiffness, immobility, etc) which can worsen headaches and pain with everyday activities. This can make it harder to recover and lengthen your overall healing time. Frustrations dealing with the car accident process, anxiety, and potential post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can further complicate the healing process, therefore the sooner you are able to get care the better able your body will be able to heal. Physical therapy can also prevent any potential long-term damage from a car accident. People who start physical therapy earlier are more likely to avoid surgery and live a relatively pain-free life for years to come.

What Happens To My Body In An Car Accident?

Every accident is unique and so is how your body moves throughout the car.  There are a variety of different factors that impact the degree of injury such as speed, the direction of impact, if you were wearing your seatbelt, if your airbags deployed, etc. The most common injury is whiplash.  In fact, every car accident will cause whiplash to some degree, where your body is quickly jerked to extreme ranges of motion.

Naturally, our body tries to protect itself in a car accident, and the muscles in your body “guard” to help prevent more serious injuries. Often your body stays in this guarded state following an accident which may result in pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, and/or headaches.

We help to heal the underlying injuries that result from the force of impact during the crash.

Following a car accident people often take painkillers and rest, but these treatment methods only temporarily relieve the pain because they don’t address the underlying problems. Physical therapy goes beyond temporary relief and helps repair and strengthen the body after a car accident. Movement pumps oxygenated blood and other nutrients to the injured site, which helps the body heal itself. The earlier we can get your body moving, the quicker your body is able to heal.

What Does Physical Therapy Look Like For An Car Accident?

Your physical therapist will evaluate you and make a plan specific to you and your presentation of symptoms. Initially, the main goal is to allow the body to calm down, reduce the pain and help aid in the initial tissue healing and repair. This often consists of soft tissue/joint mobilization and/or muscle energy techniques to restore normal muscle length, guide the muscles to relax out of their guarded state and allow them to work normally again. Once pain is reduced, we want to restore normal movement and will integrate exercises to guide the healing process, reduce pain, strengthen and stabilize and for full restoration of daily function.
